Finally, he became a partner in a 2-partner firm before moving over to consulting to the public accounting profession in the summer of 1992. Since then, he has built a reputation as a leading source of counsel, information and resources to the accounting profession, as Founder, President and CEO of MFA Group Inc, based in Oakville, near Toronto. He is the author of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants' Book, 'The Succession Planning Toolkit', a columnist for Canada's leading financial newspaper, 'The Bottom Line' and award-winning contributor to 'CA Magazine'. Steve is also the leader of several PD courses for many provincial Institutes of Chartered Accountants across Canada, and a popular speaker, writer and presenter. McIntyre-Smith believes that public accounting can be the sexiest career choice you could possibly make - if you do it right! Indeed, he has spent the majority of the last fifteen years or so helping public accounting firms do exactly that. After working with Steven Walker for many years, helping him to break away from the year-end compliance work, the two of them finally decided to offer other accounting firms across Canada the opportunity to work in a different way with their clients, and thus the Business Mentors Network was formed. M. Walker, has been a Calgary Chartered Accountant for 20 years.
Early in his carrer, he realized that traditional accounting work
- preparing financial statements and tax returns - offered little
value to clients. After many meetings with clients who were waiting for their year end to see how much money they were making, or whether they were making any money at all, Steven knew there was a problem. Clients, he found, didn't really want an accountant. Sure, they had to deal with the year end stuff, but what they were really looking for in an accountant was a business advisor, someone who could tell them where their business was headed and what to do to improve. After many years of refining the process and the business management tools, Steven finally had the system he had always dreamed of - the Profit Improvement Program. With this program, his firm, BusinessWorks, becomes an integral part of its clients' management team. The program is specifically designed to offer business owners all the advantages of a complete management team without the costs involved. Most small and medium-size businesses aren't able to afford full-time staff to provide these functions and the Profit Improvement Program allows them to get the same level of advice at a fraction of the cost.
